De la Démonomanie des Sorciers (1580) is not the most famous but certainly the most controversial work of the great French political theorist Jean Bodin (1529-1596). In it, he discussed the nature of witchcraft and gave instructions for the rigid criminal prosecution of the crimen magiae. Although truly a legal work, the text has received little attention from both jurists and legal historians. Lattmann’s study is the first to investigate the function and significance of legal normativity in Bodin’s demonology. He shows the connection between Bodin’s world view and his ideas of law, traces Bodin’s construction of the crime of witchcraft in terms of its constituent elements and explains the special legal procedure he developed for trying witches.
